Visalia Rawhide News Release
VISALIA, CA - Modesto (39-63, 13-19) held the Visalia Rawhide (59-43, 13-19) scoreless for the final eight innings of a 2-1 win to even the series at a win apiece at Rawhide Ballpark on Tuesday night.
LHP Alex Young (0-3, 5.70) fired his best start since becoming a member of the Rawhide in 2016, logging six innings and allowing seven hits and two runs (one earned) on a walk and he struck out four in the loss.
After the Rawhide took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second against RHP Yency Almonte, Modesto scored two unanswered runs and Almonte and the bullpen made them stand up.
It was RF Victor Reyes singling to begin the second frame and C Matt Jones followed with a single of his own. With one out, 2B Robelys Reyes reached on an error that brought Victor Reyes home for the 1-0 lead.
That was all Almonte would relinquish in the game, pitching seven innings and allowing one unearned run on just four hits, two walks and he struck out eight.
Modesto tied the game with an unearned run of their own in the top of the fourth. 1B Josh Fuentes reached on an error to begin the inning. RF Drew Weeks reached base safely on an infield single, his third of the series, and C Dom Nunez singled to load the bases. 3B Shane Hoelscher hit into a 6-4-3 double play that brought home Fuentes to tie the game at 1-1.
In the fifth against Young, Modesto took the lead with two outs when 1B Forrest Wall doubled and then LF Wes Rogers singled him home for the 2-1 advantage.
The Rawhide stranded a runner at third base in the seventh inning but mustered just four base runners over the final eight innings against Almonte, RHP Troy Neiman, who fired a perfect eighth inning and RHP Luis Niebla (SV: 7) who pitched a perfect ninth to close out the win and earn the save.
RHP Myles Smith pitched two scoreless innings and LHP Yuhei Nakaushiro threw a scoreless ninth inning in the loss.
The series finale tomorrow night will feature RHP Joel Payamps (2-3, 5.35) for Visalia. Modesto is sending RHP Parker French (6-6, 2.61) to the hill in game two. Tomorrow is a Win-Win Wednesday at the ballpark and if the Rawhide win then every fan in attendance will receive a free ticket voucher to the next Wednesday home game on August 10th against the Bakersfield Blaze.
