O'Fallon, MO - The River City Rascals took the final game of the season at T.R. Hughes Ballpark from the Gateway Grizzlies 9-7 in front of a sold out crowd of 4,522.
The two rivals slugged it out as there wasn't a 1-2-3 inning until the top of the seventh inning.
The Grizzlies scored first on Jonathan Armitage's solo home run in the first off starter Bryan Hansen.
The Rascals responded with three in the bottom half of the first off Nathan Roush as Brad Hough, who was voted on by the Rascal fans as the most exciting player in 2007, hit his ninth home run which scored two. Jeff Miller would then come around after he doubled and scored on Angel Colon's RBI groundout to put the Rascals on top 3-1.
Gateway and River City exchanged blows in the second through fourth innings with Gateway scoring runs on a wild pitch in the second and a sacrifice fly in the fourth. The Rascals scored twice in the third and fourth with Ken Lup, Jeff Miller and Trey Hendricks picking up RBIs.
After four it was 7-3 River City. Hansen's night finished during the fourth inning as Ryan Doherty entered. Roush's night went three innings on short rest.
In the fifth, the Grizzlies made their push against Doherty. The 7'1 right-handed allowed three runs all with two outs as Gateway made it 7-6.
The Grizzlies tied the game in the sixth off Chad Linder when another leadoff walk, the Rascals fourth of the game, scored on Dustin Roberts' RBI double.
River City came right back to take the lead in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, Lup provided his third hit of the night to drive in two runs and the Rascals led 9-7.
Mike Benacka had a special night as well as his save in the ninth gave him 20 on the season which sets a new single season Rascals record.
Linder (3-3) got the win going three innings allowing one earned run as he struck out a career high six.
The Rascals (36-58) will travel to Gateway (62-29) on Saturday night for the last two games of the regular season. River City needs to take both to tie the season series at eight apiece. Steve Brook (11-6) takes the mound for the Rascals against Toro Trevino (10-5) from GCS Ballpark.
