O'Fallon, MO -- On Friday, August 31, the Frontier League announced the award winners for the 2007 season and two members of the River City Rascals organization have been recognized for their outstanding performances.

Rascal pitcher Steve Brook won the Fran Riordan Citizenship Award and Chris Young was recognized as the top groundskeeper in the Frontier League.

Brook has been with the Rascals now for four seasons. He currently holds the Rascals' record for wins in a career at 33, which ranks third all-time in the Frontier League. Off the field Brook leads the Bethesda Baptist Worship Team at his church and on Friday, August 17, Brook led his praise band in front of T.R. Hughes Ballpark after the Rascals win over the Slippery Rock Sliders, where Brook also got the win.

"Steve is one of the finest human beings you will find in this league," Rascals owner Steve Malliet said. "He goes out of his way to help people and genuinely cares about those around him. He exemplifies the finest qualities the River City Rascals look for in their players."

In the off-season, Brook helps his wife Ellen care for their two children as well as teaches in the Fort Zumwalt School District at the middle school level. During the 2006-2007 school year he was involved with Big Brothers/Big Sisters at Fort Zumwalt West Middle School.

"Obviously I'm happy I won this award because it shows that the rest of the league respects the way I carry myself on and off the field," Brook said. "I try to set a good example for the other guys so it's nice to be noticed."

Young brought home the Frontier League Groundskeeper of the Year Award for the third straight year. He joined the Rascals in 2003 and originally worked for the city of O'Fallon. Heidco, the company which employs Young, was contracted exclusively for the first time by the River City Rascals this season.

"This year was especially gratifying because of it being the first year for Heidco to work directly under the Rascals organization," Young said. "A big thanks goes out to all of my crew because I think they take as much pride in the field as I do. I also want to thank Steve (Malliet) for working with us so we can keep this field in such great shape."

Malliet holds the newly renovated T.R. Hughes Ballpark in high esteem and the playing surface is a big part the baseball experience.

"Chris truly has the finest playing surface in all of minor league baseball," said Malliet. "His field rivals most big league fields and players and coaches from around the league marvel at how nice it is to play on."

The River City Rascals want to congratulate both Brook and Young on their outstanding performances and recognize them as being models of having pride in excellence.
