SAUGET, IL - The River City Rascals started 2009 with a bang, scoring seven runs on 16 hits to route the Grizzlies 7-1 at GCS Ballpark.

The Rascals (1-0) scored in the first five innings and led 6-0 after five innings. Kevin Reynolds started the scoring in the first with an RBI single to plate Scott Houin. Jorge Gutierrez continued the fun in the second with an RBI groundout to score Scott Robinson from third.

Grizzlie starter, Mark Brackman (0-1), allowed two more runs in the third on singles by JoJo Batten and Chad Maddox. Brackman was forced from the game in the fourth after Houin reached on a wild pitch strikeout, stole second and scored on a Batten single. The Gateway starter went 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs.

Jake Laber (1-0) was outstanding in his 2009 debut, stifling the Gateway hitters for six innings. Laber went six innings, allowing one run on only four hits with four strikeouts. The lefty benefited from an excellent catch from Houin in right as the outfielder leaped over the fence to rob Jareck West of a home run.

Gateway (0-1) got their only run in the sixth on a Chad Rothford single, scoring Stephen Douglas from third base.

Mike Hart and Tony Marsala combined for the final three innings out of the bullpen, allowing no hits while striking out four.

Reynolds led the way with four hits and an RBI for the Rascals. Robinson and Houin each had three hits while Batten and Chris Colton added a pair of hits in the win.

Douglas was 2-4 with a run scored in the loss for Gateway and Rothford had the lone RBI for the Grizzlies.
