
Opening Day Is Here; Laber Gets Starting Nod

River City Rascals News Release
The River City Rascals begin their 2009 season tonight at GCS Ballpark against the Gateway Grizzlies at 7:05 p.m. The opening day roster is set and Jake Laber will get the opening day honor on the mound.
Laber made 11 starts last season for River City, compiling a 4-3 record with a 4.01 earned-run average. The left-handed pitcher allowed 60 hits in 67.1 innings pitched with 55 strikeouts and 39 walks. Laber ended the 2008 season with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the independent Northern League.
The Fargo, North Dakota native was excellent in his lone start last season against the Grizzlies, tossing eight innings in 4-3 win at T.R. Hughes Ballpark. Laber allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with eight strikeouts.
The Rascals also made their final roster cuts this week, releasing seven players in the last six days. Among the cuts were pitchers Stephen Puhl, Matt Restivo, Jared Sutton, and Adam Tollefson, catchers Pete Paris and Jason Scherrer, and former Rascals All-Star, Phil Laurent. River City also signed Florissant, MO native and former St. Louis University pitcher Scott Turmail yesterday, along with catcher Daniel Sawyer.
The River City roster currently sits at 26 players, with two players on injured reserve and one on the suspended list. The roster breakdown includes 13 pitchers, three catchers, six infielders, and four outfielders. 16 different states are represented on the roster with a team high four from Georgia and Florida. There are three veterans, two LS-2's, seven LS-1's, seven Rookie-2's, and seven more Rookie-1's. Five were with the Rascals at one point last season with another five on a Frontier League roster. Ten were drafted by major league clubs and ten have played in affiliated baseball at one point in time. The youngest player is 22 years old with the oldest at 26.
