
Rascals Allow Big Inning, Lose Opener

O'Fallon, MO - The Rascals (12-10) lost their series opener against the Florence Freedom (9-13) 11-4 on Tuesday, June 9 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark.
The Rascals took a 2-0 lead in the second inning. 1B Danny Canela reached on a two-base error to start the inning. 3B Taylor Ard then singled home Canela and extended his hit streak to 10 games. After Ard stole second base, C Josh Ludy hit an RBI single.
Florence took its first lead of the game with three runs in the fourth frame. Sam Eberle doubled and advanced to third on an Austin Newell single. Gaby Juarbe then dove in Eberle on a single, and Newell scored on a wild pitch. Rob Kelly then hit an RBI double.
Newell led off the sixth inning with a double and went to third on a groundout. Cody Bishop then hit an RBI sacrifice fly to centerfield.
The Rascals tied the game in the bottom of the inning. 2B Hector Crespo hit a leadoff single. RF Saxon Butler then hit a single, and left fielder Newell committed a fielding error that allowed Crespo to score. CF Curran Redal tied the game on a two-out RBI double.
The Freedom scored two unearned runs in the eighth to take a 6-4 lead. Eberle led off with a single, and Newell then reached on a three-base error by Canela that allowed Eberle to score. Juarbe followed with an RBI single.
Florence score five more runs in the ninth inning. Travis Weaver led off with a single and advanced to third on a two-base fielding error by Butler. Sean Mahley and Daniel Fraga followed with walks to load the bases with no outs. Eberle drove in a pair on a single, and two more runs scored on a hit by Newell. Newell advanced to third base on a throwing error by Redal and scored on a sacrifice flyout by Juarbe.
RHP Marc Rutledge received a no-decision after allowing three runs, four hits, and two walks. He struck out two batters in 3.1 innings. RHP Chandler Jagodzinski (L, 0-1) received the loss despite not allowing an earned run. He surrendered two unearned runs and three hits in 1.0 inning. RHP Heith Hatfield pitched a scoreless 1.2 inning of relief. RHP Derek Cape ceded one run on one hit in 1.0 inning. RHP Will Schierholz and LHP Anthony Ferrara combined for 1.0 shutout inning. RHP Zeb Sneed allowed five runs, four earned, and did not record an out. RHP Tommy Danczyk surrendered one hit in 1.0 inning.
Florence starter Chuck Weaver did not receive a decision after surrendering four runs, two earned, on 11 hits and a walk. Tony Vocca (W, 1-0) earned the win after tossing 1.1 inning. Seth Harvey and Ed Kohout each pitched 1.0 frame in relief.
The Rascals and Florence Freedom continue their series on Wednesday, June 10 at T.R. Hughes Ballpark at 6:35 p.m. CST.
