Colorado Rapids News Release
The Colorado Rapids U-14 Team earned a 2-0 victory over FC Dallas on Wednesday evening at the Dallas Cup, finishing the group stage 3-0-0 and advancing to the quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon against local side Solar Chelsea. The match takes place this afternoon at 4 p.m. CT / 3 p.m. MT, and fans can follow action on Twitter: @RapidsAcademy and @Colorado Rapids.
On Wednesday, the Rapids needed a victory in order to secure top spot in the group and move on to the next round. Head Coach Gary Evans instructed the team to get control of the game, and they did just that despite the windy conditions. Midway through the first half, Enoch Mushagalusa finished a rebound from a free kick outside the box to give his team the lead.
FC Dallas made several changes at halftime in an attempt to shake up the Rapids, but Colorado handled it well and doubled the lead with a Denilo Pekovic goal, assisted by Greg Tracy. Wilmer Cabrera, who was a playmaker in the first two matches, continued his good form and created several chances in the second half. With the win, the Rapids enjoyed a 100% record in the group stage, having previously beaten Prepa Tec of Mexico 2-0 and FC Astoria Walldorf of Germany 3-1.
The Dallas Cup is one of the world's most prestigious youth tournaments, and has been held every year since 1980 with the participation of some of the top teams in the world. Previous winners at the Super Group level (Under-19) include Real Madrid (Spain), Liverpool (England), Corinthians (Brazil), San Lorenzo (Argentina), and Tigres (Mexico). The defending champions are English club Fulham.
