Rapids to Face New York in Final U.S. Open Cup Qualifier Match

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (Thursday, May 13, 2010) - The Colorado Rapids will take on the New York Red Bulls in a final play-in match for qualification for America's oldest sporting tournament on Wednesday, May 26 at 6:00 pm MT at Red Bull Arena.

Colorado advanced to this final qualifier behind a 2-1 win over the Kansas City Wizards on April 13, while New York earned their spot in the match following a 3-0 victory over the New England Revolution last night.

If the Rapids defeat New York, they would be entered into the U.S. Open Cup round of 16 with their next opponent to be determined at a later time.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, the U.S. Soccer Federation's National Championship, is an annual competition open to all amateur and professional soccer teams affiliated with U.S. Soccer. It is the oldest annual team tournament in U.S. sports history and among the oldest soccer tournaments of its type in the world.

Consistent with 2008 and 2009, the format for 2010 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup will see six U.S.-based Major League Soccer teams automatically qualify for the tournament's round of 16, based on 2009 regular season finish, while the remaining nine U.S.-based MLS teams are forced to go through qualifying for two spots into the tournament.
