Spokane Indians News Release
SPOKANE, Wash. - The Texas Rangers selected right-handed pitcher Dillon Tate from UC Santa Barbara with the No. 4 overall selection in the 2015 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Baseball America ranked Tate as the top pitcher and third-best overall prospect in the entire draft.
The Claremont, Calif., native finished his 2015 college season with an 8-5 record, 111 strikeouts and a 2.26 ERA as the Gauchos' top starter. He allowed just 5.75 hits per nine innings which ranks 11th in the nation. One of his more impressive stats is the fact that he only allowed three home runs in his three-year career, one of which was to Chicago Cubs' rookie phenom, Kris Bryant.
Tate had his best performance as a member of the U.S. collegiate national team's bullpen last summer. He uses a fastball that can touch 98 mph, and an 87 mph slider to confuse opposing hitters. He also carries a curveball and changeup in his arsenal.
In the second round, 45th overall, the Rangers selected Eric Jenkins, a center fielder from West Columbus High School in North Carolina. The left-handed speedster swiped 27 bases his senior year, and hit .323 with four home runs. Jenkins projects as a leadoff hitter who will stick in center field. His bat speed is one of his more impressive tools.
The 2015 MLB Draft will continue tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9th with Rounds 3-10.
