Rangers OF Nomar Mazara Joins Express on Rehab Assignment

ROUND ROCK, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that OF Nomar Mazara is joining the Round Rock Express on a major league rehab assignment beginning tonight, Thursday, August 9. The outfielder is recovering from a right thumb strain he suffered back on July 17. Mazara is set to start in right field tonight as Round Rock hosts the Omaha Storm Chasers at 7:05 p.m. at Dell Diamond.

Mazara was hitting .272 (96-353) with 16 doubles, a triple, 15 home runs and 58 RBI in 91 games prior to the injury. The 23-year-old is returning to Round Rock for the first time since 2016, when he appeared in just three road games for the Express before being promoted to make his major league debut with the Rangers on April 10. Mazara played in 20 games with the E-Train in 2015, hitting .358 (29-81) with four doubles, a home run and 13 RBI.

In 384 career games at the major league level, Mazara is hitting .262 (373-1423) with 59 doubles, six triples, 55 home runs and 223 RBI. The Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic native was originally signed by the Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2011. He was named the American League Rookie of the Month in both April and May 2016.

Round Rock opens a four-game homestand against the Omaha Storm Chasers (Kansas City Royals affiliate) on Thursday, April 9 at Dell Diamond. Newly-acquired Express RHP Chris Tillman (0-0, 0.00) is set to make his team debut opposite Storm Chasers RHP Jonathan Dziedzic (5-8, 3.78). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
