Rangers Host Guelph for Valentine's Day Game

Kitchener, ON - The Kitchener Rangers are looking to get back in the win column against the Guelph Storm on Tuesday night, puck drop is slated for 7 pm. The Rangers' last win came against the Storm on home ice on February 2nd. Great seats are still available for this divisional matchup.

PROMOTIONS:

In celebration of Canada's Agriculture Day, and to help restock food and shelves, the Kitchener Rangers are teaming up with Ontario Pork and Feed Ontario, to hold a food drive for The Food Bank of Waterloo Region. On Tuesday, February 13, Rangers fans are being asked to bring non-perishable food items or monetary donations to the game.

HEAD-TO-HEAD

This Season:

The divisional rivals have faced off five times this season with the Rangers holding the overall record at 4-1-0-0 and when at The Aud they are 2-0-0-0. The Rangers last hosted the Storm on February 2nd when they won the game 3-2 in overtime. Zander Veccia opened the scoring for Guelph followed by another from Jett Luchanko. The Rangers came from behind and tied the game up with goals from Filip Mešár (Montreal Canadiens) and Matthew Sop. Sop was the overtime hero for the fourth time this season as he put the game to rest after scoring on a penalty shot.

Over the Years:

The Rangers and Storm have played each other 39 times over the past five seasons. The Rangers hold the overall record at 25-13-1-0 and continue to own the record at home with a 13-6-0-0 record. In these 39 games, Kitchener has scored 148 goals while the Storm have scored 138. In the 2022-23 season, the Rangers had a 6-2-0-0 record and when on home ice they went 4-0 against the Storm.

Last Time Out:

The Rangers have been on the road for their last three games in Erie, Kingston, and Ottawa where they were unsuccessful. Both games this past weekend in Kingston and Ottawa were tightly contested with the game-deciding goals being scored in the final minutes.

Carson Rehkopf returned to his scoring ways scoring three goals in his last two games after going without a goal in nine games. Rehkopf also tallied his 40th goal of the season on Saturday in Ottawa along with his 160th career point on Friday in Kingston.

Rangers to Watch:

Hunter Brzustewicz (Calgary Flames) hit 71 points (8G, 63A) in the season on Friday in Kingston. Brzustewicz is the first Rangers defenceman to hit 70 points in a season since Ryan Murphy in the 2010-11 season when he had 79 points (26G, 53A).

In 13 games since returning from the World Juniors, Carson Rehkopf (Seattle Kraken) has recorded nine goals and five assists for 14 points. Rehkopf has played 44 games this season registering a 40-29-69 stat line. Over the past two games, he has three goals.

Matthew Sop leads the Rangers offense with 31 goals and 39 assists for 70 points in 51 games. Over the past six games, the centreman has seven points, five goals and two assists, going pointless in only one of those six games. Against Guelph this season, Sop has had multi-point games in all five for 10 points (4G, 6A).

Goaltending:

Jackson Parsons continues to stand tall for the Rangers playing in 38 games this season with a 19-14-1-0 record. In these games, Parsons has earned himself a 3.06 goals against average which is fourth best in the OHL and a .895 save percentage. The netminder has played all five games against the Storm this season. In the most recent game against the Storm, he faced 25 shots allowing two finishing the game with a 1.98 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage.

Last Time Out:

The Guelph Storm are currently on a six-game losing streak, losing to Owen Sound, Erie, Kitchener, London, Brantford and most recently Sarnia. On Saturday the Storm faced the Sting on the road taking the game into overtime but ultimately losing 3-2. Ryan McGuire grabbed the Storm's opening goal assisted by Charlie Paquette. Paquette netted a goal giving Guelph the lead midway through the third period. They were unable to keep the lead in the game and went to overtime with Sarnia taking the game.

Storm to Watch:

Jett Luchanko continues to lead the Storm as the top point-getter with 17 goals and 37 assists for 54 points. Over the past 10 games, Luchanko has four goals and four assists for eight points, going pointless in three of these games. In five games against the Rangers, Luchanko has five points (2G, 3A). The draft-eligible centreman is ranked 21st by NHL Central Scouting for the upcoming 2024 NHL Draft.

Kitchener native Braeden Bowman is second on the Storm in points and the top goal scorer with 26 goals and 25 assists for 51 points. Over the past 10 games, Bowman has eight points, four goals and four assists. Against the Rangers this season, Bowman has four goals and four assists for eight points in five games.

Thomas Budnick is second in Storm defencemen points with eight goals and 14 assists behind Michael Buchinger (St. Louis Blues) who is out due to an injury. Budnick is on a three-game point streak after Saturday's contest in Sarnia with three assists over these games. Budnick was traded from the Kingston Frontenacs to the Storm on December 12th in exchange for a trio of OHL Priority Selections.

Goaltender:

Damian Slavik has played 15 games for Guelph with a 6-2-3-0 record, a 2.63 goals against average, and a .904 save percentage. Slavik has played in four games against the Rangers, starting the most recent game on February 2nd. Slavik faced 23 shots and allowed three goals, finishing the game with a 2.91 goals against average and a .870 save percentage. Slavik played in Guelph's most recent game against Sarnia where he faced 23 shots allowing three to finish the game with a .870 save percentage and a 2.98 goals-against average.
