Frederick Keys News Release
A rainy evening played havoc with the Frederick Keys tonight, as the squad struggled at the plate and on the mound, losing to the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 5-0. The team was held scoreless through nine innings, gathering just three hits for the loss.
RHP Cory Morris (0-2) takes the loss, as he allowed twelve Pelican hits and five runs. Morris allowed six hits before being relieved by RHP Don Levinski in the fourth inning. RHP Nick McCurdy followed in the sixth inning and RHP Ryan Keefer closed.
DH Branden Florence started out the first inning with a single to left field, but the Keys then went hitless until SS Jose Morban's single in the third. Morban was picked off at second for an out. CF BJ Littleton hit a solid single in the sixth, then stole second and gained third on a wild pitch by Pelicans starter Blaine Boyer. The Keys were shut down, however, by two consecutive pop ups to left field to end the inning.
Pelican batters dominated with five hitters in the line-up getting on base. SS Luis Hernandez started off the fourth inning with a single and CF Gregor Blanco and 3B Willie James both got two hits each. RF Jeff Francoeur and LF Carlos Duran both went 3-4 for the night, with Francoeur smacking in two RBI. RHP Blaine Boyer claims the win, with a total of four strikeouts. RHP Glenn Tucker relieved in the eighth to finish off the game.
The Keys and Pelicans have split the series one game apiece. The teams will meet again at Coastal Federal Field for the third and last game at 6:05 PM on Saturday, July 3rd.
