CARY, N.C. - The Carolina RailHawks picked up their first win of the 2011 season Saturday, downing the Montreal Impact 2-1 at WakeMed Soccer Park.
The RailHawks overcame a 1-0 deficit after 11 minutes and scored twice before intermission to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. Etienne Barbara knocked in the equalizer in the 21st minute and Pablo Campos scored the go-ahead goal in the 35th.
With the win, the RailHawks extended their home unbeaten streak over the Impact to six matches (3-0-3).
In the 11th minute, Montreal's Kevin Hatchi was unmarked near the top of the area on a corner kick. The ball flew through the area, and Hatchi smashed a shot in at the near post.
In the 21st minute, the RailHawks nearly equalized on Brad Rusin's header, but it was cleared off the line by Idriss Ech Chergui. The RailHawks were able to keep the ball in the area. It eventually fell to Etienne Barbara, and he tucked it the equalizer, his second goal of the season.
The RailHawks took the lead in the 35th minute when Watson played Campos in behind the Montreal defense. Campos collected the pass then chipped it over Montreal goalkeeper Bill Gaudette as he charged off his line.
The RailHawks close out their three-match, season-opening homestand on Wednesday, when they will face FC Edmonton at 7 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park.
