North Carolina FC News Release
The Carolina RailHawks (5-2-6, 21 pts.) are still undefeated on the road after their brilliant 2-0 win over the Puerto Rico Islanders (5-7-2, 17 pts.) on Sunday night. Early goals by Sallieu Bundu and Josh Gardner were all the RailHawks needed to take another key three points from Ramon Loubriel stadium this season. Eric Reed had his second consecutive shutout and his third of the season cementing him as one of the best goalkeepers in the league.
"I'm very pleased with our second road win in a row," said RailHawks coach Martin Rennie. "We had to work really hard for it tonight as Puerto Rico is a very difficult place to play in. We managed to pick up six points here this season and now we look forward to our next game in Montreal."
The RailHawks began the match controlling the game immediately while Puerto Rico resorted to long balls trying to break down a solid Carolina defense. A shot by Islanders' Keon Daniel from outside the box in the 10th minute ended wide right while Floyd Franks tried one from outside the box in the 13th but the ball ended in the arms of PR netminder Bill Gaudette. The first goal came just five minutes later when Bundu receieved the ball from Matt Bobo and proceeded to blast a rocket past Gaudette from the top of the 18 yard box. Eight minutes later Josh Gardner found himself in the right place at the right time catching a rebound from Amir Lowery off a throw in and ripping the ball into the back of the net for the 2-0 lead. Puerto Rico turned up the heat trying to take advantage the RailHawks defense but to no avail sending the teams to the locker rooms with the RailHawks ahead by two.
Puerto Rico began to attack more in the second half but the RailHawks defense was ready to thwart any attempts by the Islanders to get on the board. In the 51st minute a PR shot went up high and soon after Eric Reed made one of his many key saves of the evening off a point blank shot by the Islanders. In the end the RailHawks defense was able to help preserve Eric Reed's shutout, his third of the season.
Next the RailHawks continue their road trip with two more matches in the span of seven days as they travel to Montreal on July 14 and end their road trip in Rochester on July 17. They return home for a midweek game on July 27 when they host the Rochester Rhinos at 7 p.m. It will be Brewsday Tuesday as all draft beer will only be $1. $49 Family Four-packs are also available for advance purchase for this match.
