CARY, NC - The Carolina RailHawks put on a show in their final match of the season, taking down Indy Eleven by a score line of 3-1 in at WakeMed Soccer Park Friday night. The victory capped off a great day for the RailHawks community, who welcomed new owner Stephen Malik earlier in the day and celebrated Fan Appreciation Night during the match.
"We had an ideal game. We had great goals, great movement, great passing and great play all around," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "We've got to bring a championship here next year and reward these fans for all their support. I'm excited about the future and I'm sure they are as well."
The RailHawks jumped out to a quick start for their final match. In the 5th minute, Tiyi Shipalane left a ball for Nacho Novo at the top of the box, but Novo's shot soared over the goal's top right corner. Shipalane and Novo connected again four minutes later, but this time Novo found the back of the net. Shipalane sent a beautiful ball across the box toward a charging Novo, who slid his shot past Indy Eleven goalie Keith Cardona to give the RailHawks an early 1-0 lead. The assist was Shipalane's ninth of the season, tying him for most assists in the NASL.
Shipalane and the RailHawks struck again in the 16th minute to open up a 2-0 lead. Shipalane settled a long ball from Futty Danso, cut past an Indy Eleven defender and perfectly placed his shot in the bottom right corner. Shipalane's stellar performance came hours after the standout signed a new multi-year contract with the RailHawks. Indy Eleven cut the RailHawks' lead to 2-1 in the 24th minute. Hunter Gilstrap did well to block a Jaime Frias shot from the top of the box, but Marvin Ceballos was there to tap in the rebound.
In the second half, the RailHawks and Indy Eleven battled with end-to-end action, but the RailHawks refused to end the season with anything but a win. In the 86th minute, Mark Anderson delivered a set-piece ball toward Alex Pérez, who headed the ball into the far post to seal the RailHawks' 3-1 victory. The RailHawks look forward to returning to WakeMed Soccer Park with new owner Stephen Malik and their great fans for the Spring 2016 season.
