CARY NC - The Carolina RailHawks lost their second game of the 2016 NASL Spring Season, falling, 3-1, to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers at WakeMed Soccer Park on Saturday night.
Fort Lauderdale scored all three goals in the first half. Canadian international Nana Attakoro delivered a perfect cross to Brazilian Maicon Santos in the 7th minute for the first goal. Attakora would score a goal of his own in the 23rd minute. Fellow Brazilian Matheus Carvalho, who had just replaced the injured Santos, made it 3-0 in the 38th minute. Nunez would finish with two assists.
"Defensively, we just weren't good enough in the first half," said RailHawks Head Coach Colin Clarke. "It's unfortunate, because the energy of the crowd was fantastic. I did think we did some good things in the second half but it just wasn't enough."
Carolina looked like it would make a game of it when forward Brian Shriver scored his second goal of the season in the 67th minute. Right back Kareem Moses sent a ball into the box that Shriver headed past Strikers goalkeeper Diego Restrepo.
Carolina had several other chances late in the game, including a shot from Nazmi Albadawi that hit the near post and bounced away.
"Just like last week, we did not quit," Clarke said. "For sure, if we score that second goal it's a different game. We are still in great shape to win the NASL Spring Season. For me, it's a must-win situation in our next game against Miami. That's how we need to approach our remaining games, especially after such a great start to the season."
The RailHawks return to WakeMed Soccer Park next Saturday, May 14, to face Miami FC at 7:30 pm. Tickets are still available at www.CarolinaRailHawks.com.
