RailHawks face Major League Soccer's Powerhouse New England Revolution
March 13, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1)
North Carolina FC News Release
Cary, NC (Friday, March 13, 2009) - The Carolina RailHawks under the direction of new Head Coach Martin Rennie, are all set to play their first big match of the season against Major League Soccer's New England Revolution on Saturday, March 14, at 7:00 p.m. at WakeMed Soccer Park in the Inaugural "Community Shield" match. The match is presented by the Umstead Hotel and Spa and tickets ($10, $15 and $20) may be purchased at the LGFCU Box office, by calling 919-859-KICK (5425) or by visiting www.carolinarailhawks.com.
"I am happy to make my WakeMed Soccer Park debut against such a quality side," said RailHawks Head Coach Martin Rennie. "It will allow us to further evaluate our roster in preparation for the 2009 USL-1 Season as we play against a strong team at the end of their preseason."
"It's going to be a tough game for a lot of reasons," said Revolution Head Coach Steve Nicol. "I'm sure they want to show MLS what they're all about, and there are also a lot of ex-MLS players in their team and they'll want to prove a point, as well. So, when you put those two factors together it means that we're going to get a tough night."
The New England Revolution is one of the most successful and star-studded teams in Major League Soccer, featuring perennial MLS all-stars in forward Taylor Twellman, midfielders Steve Ralston and Shalrie Joseph and goalkeeper Matt Reis. The Revolution also feature some of Tobacco Road's greatest former student-athletes in Duke's Jay Heaps and Mike Videira as well as Wake Forest's Wells Thompson and Pat Phelan. In the last seven years, the Revolution have been to six Eastern Conference finals and four MLS Cup finals.
This will be the second time the New England Revolution and the Carolina RailHawks meet in the RailHawks' brief history. In 2007 the RailHawks traveled to New London, CT to face the Revolution in the semi-final of the US Open Cup. The Revolution won that match in double-overtime after 120 minutes of pure heartfelt soccer and went on to win the US Open Cup.
The Carolina RailHawks' 2009 season ticket drive is in full swing with the "All-Inclusive" package, that includes the Major League Soccer exhibition against the New England Revolution on March 14, and the CD Olimpia exhibition on March 27, as well as other packages tailored to every soccer fan's needs. For more information contact the LGFCU Box Office at 919-859-KICK (5425) or visit www.carolinarailhawks.com.
