Tampa, FL (Wednesday, August 25, 2010) - The Carolina RailHawks (9-7-7, 34 pts) broke another franchise record Wednesday night by defeating the Tampa Bay Rowdies (6-9-9, 23 pts.) 2-1 at George Steinbrenner Stadium. First half goals by Matt Bobo and Etienne Barbara proved to be enough for the Railhawks to take home their seventh road win of the season. This victory breaks the previous record of six away wins set in 2009.
"The team showed a lot of carachter and played very well tonight," said RailHawks head coach Martin Rennie. "I am very pleased with the result and had we taken more chances it would've been a very comfortable win for us. It is great to break another franchise record and breaking two records in a week gives the team a lot of confidence going forward."
The first half began with the Rowdies showing their teeth and the RailHawks playing it safe. Rowdies defender Graham Tatters broke through the RailHawks' defense early drawing a foul and a free kick from outside the box while midflieder Long Tan had a 13th minute point blank shot saved by Nic Platter. The RailHawks seemed to pick up the pace right after that and in the 23rd minute Matt Bobo connected on a corner kick by Daniel Paladini for the 1-0 lead. The RailHawks found their rhythm and continued to lay siege to Daryl Sattler's goal beating the offside trap and getting in front of Sattler. In the 40th minute Matt Watson found Etienne Barbara on a run down the middle. Barbara beat two defenders and slotted the ball past Sattler to give the Railhawks a 2-0 lead at the half.
Heavy rain marred the run of play in the second half slowing down the pace considerably. Etienne Barbara found himself in front of Sattler in the 43rd but the Rowdies keeper was able to clear easily. In the 49th Paladini took a free kick punched out by the Tampa netminder with Matt Watson kicking the rebound inches wide. The RailHawks continued to search for a third goal but the weather conditions did not help them. In the 88th minute of play Rowdies midfielder Ricardo Sanchez was able to draw one back for Tampa with one of his signature free kicks from 30 yards out. Tampa almost tied up the game in stoppage but Matt Bobo was able to clear a ball off the line to preserve the 2-1 victory.
The RailHawks return home this Saturday, August 28 as they host the Puerto Rico Islanders at 7 p.m. The match is presented by LGFCU and it is college night at WakeMed Soccer Park.
