CARY, NC - The Carolina RailHawks made their 2016 return to WakeMed Soccer Park with a 3-0 loss to 10-time Mexican champion Deportivo Toluca F.C. in an international exhibition match on Saturday afternoon.
The two teams played in the RailHawks' last preseason game in front of a record-setting 9,032 fans, as excitement builds for the impending Regular Season.
Despite early pressure from the RailHawks, Toluca FC broke through first, with a goal from Gerardo Flores in the 13th minute. After goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald's initial save pushed the ball back into play, forward Enrique Triverio passed the ball to Flores, who slipped it past Fitzgerald.
Toluca FC struck again in the 15th minute with a close range goal from Triverio. The RailHawks responded with a great chance that came in the 26th minute when a shot from James Marcelin barely went wide of the net.
Looking to trim Toluca FC's lead early, the RailHawks came out of halftime intermission energized, with a great chance coming in the 46th minute as Tiyi Shipalane hit the far post.
Defensively, Connor Tobin denied Toluca F.C. a near third goal in the 65th minute, keeping the score 2-0. However, Toluca FC's Edy Bambrila scored the final goal of the match in the 77th minute.
Worth noting, Jeremy Kelly, who is committed to playing with UNC Chapel Hill, made his senior team debut for the RailHawks as Head Coach Colin Clarke tested out his lineups in preparation for next weekend's home opening match.
