MONTREAL (Sunday, May 30 2010) - The Carolina RailHawks (3-2-2, 11 pts) beat the Montreal Impact (3-2-2, 11 pts) 2-0, earning their first ever victory at Saputo Stadium in Montreal, Canada. Etienne Barbara kicked off the scoring in the 20th minute, and Andriy Budnyy sealed it in stoppage time for the RailHawks.
"It was a game we played well." Said RailHawks head coach Martin Rennie. "We pressed the ball well, we defended well, and we got the chances we took, so we're very happy with the result."
The RailHawks came out applying pressure from the opening whistle. Josh Gardner and Etienne Barbara's efforts up top led to a number of Impact turnovers. The RailHawks' offensive pressure eventually paid off in the 20th minute. David Hayes gained possession in midfield and played a perfectly weighted ball to Barbara who beat his defender and slipped it under Impact goalkeeper Matt Jordan. The RailHawks fended off a few Impact chances to close out the half up 1-0.
The Impact came out with a heightened sense of urgency in the second half, only to be quelled by Eric Reed and the RailHawks defense. Reed kept the RailHawks on top in the 63rd minute, when he made a lunging save on Impact midfielder David Testo's shot.
Defensive clearances from Mark Schulte and company led to more offensive chances for the RailHawks. Second half substitute Andriy Budnyy forced a turnover and scored in the dieing minutes of stoppage time to give the RailHawks a 2-0 victory.
Next, the RailHawks continue their road trip on Sunday, June 6 in Portland, when they take on the Timbers. The next regular season home game will be Saturday, June 19 at 7 p.m. when they host Crystal Palace Baltimore. It will be Bark in the Park Night and fans will also not want to miss the Father's Day celebrations the RailHawks are planning.
