JOLIET, IL-The Gary SouthShore RailCats (27-11) jumped out to a 3-0 lead thanks to home runs by Jose Yepez (1-2) and Jay Pecci (2-5) before scoring three runs in the eighth inning to cement an 8-1 victory over the Joliet JackHammers (17-21) before 2,751 fans at Silver Cross Field on Wednesday night. The JackHammers finish their home stand with a 4-2 record and now head to Fargo-Moorhead for a five-game series beginning Friday night at 7:00 p.m.

The RailCats got on the board first when Yepez hit a solo home run against JackHammers starting pitcher Nick Renault (5-2). He lifted a fly ball over the left field wall for his third home run of the season. The RailCats took a 1-0 lead.

Gary pushed its lead to 3-0 with a two-run home run in the sixth inning. Eric McNamee (1-4) worked a one-out walk against Renault. Pecci stepped up to home plate and hit a two-run home run over the right field wall for a 3-0 RailCats lead.

The JackHammers scored their one and only run in the sixth inning against Habel. Juan Diaz (3-3) hit a solo home run over the right field wall to get the JackHammers on the board at 3-1.

The RailCats scored three runs in the eighth inning to cement a 6-1 lead. Pecci hit a one-out single and moved to second base on a walk by Eric Blakely (1-3). Yepez worked a walk to load the bases. Tanner Townsend (1-4) hit a bases-clearing double to give the RailCats a five-run lead.

Renault suffered the loss, after allowing five runs on seven and one-thirds innings pitched. He surrendered four hits, four walks and five strikeouts for just his second loss of the season.

Loose Gravel: Renault came into the game with a streak of 16.1 scoreless innings at Silver Cross Field. Renault did not allow a run at Silver Cross Field over his last two starts at home. With the second inning home run by Yepez, the scoreless innings streak ended at 17.1 innings pitched.

The JackHammers now travel to Fargo, ND to take on the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 p.m. on 1340 WJOL and online at www.jackhammerbaseball.com. Left-handed pitcher Bryan Forystek (0-0, 1.80) gets the start for the JackHammers against a yet-to-be-determined starting pitcher for the RedHawks.
