GARY – In an effort to teach fourth and fifth grade students to celebrate diversity, the Gary SouthShore RailCats have developed the T.E.A.M. Program for use in classrooms throughout Northwest Indiana in 2004.

The T.E.A.M. program – T.E.A.M. stands for Together Everyone Achieves More – is a three-component program that includes a pre-writing exercise, an essay contest and incentives, with each element focusing on diversity. Students who complete the program receive a RailCats Rewards pack, including the opportunity to attend a RailCats game, and a school visit from Rusty, the RailCats' mascot (subject to availability).

"The complex issue of diversity is an important one for many reasons," said Aukesha Henry, RailCats Director of Community Relations and the author and coordinator of the T.E.A.M. Program. "One of the most important reasons is that great strength can be found in diversity: Strength of character, ideas and values. We would like to express the value of diversity to Northwest Indiana students."

The T.E.A.M Program is designed to promote a stronger sense of self for students as well as a greater interest in learning more about their classmates and community. More than 400 students are already enrolled in the program, including students from the communities of Gary, Lake Ridge, Michigan City, and Valparaiso.

"It is our hope that educators will utilize this program in their classes and that it will be beneficial to students throughout Northwest Indiana," Henry said.

Educators who are interested in receiving a T.E.A.M. Program packet or obtaining more information may contact Ms. Henry at (219) 882-2255.
