Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

GARY – The Gary SouthShore RailCats have signed pitcher Chris Andel to a 2004 contract, the team announced today.

Andel, 23, went 2-0, 3.58 ERA with 3 saves in 16 appearances for the RailCats in 2003, after being signed as a rookie free agent by the RailCats on July 18.

Andel made his professional baseball debut two days later at Silver Cross Field in Joliet, yielding two runs on three hits in one inning of work in a 5-0 RailCats loss. Andel pitched the final four innings of an 11-7 win at Kansas City on August 5 to record his first professional save, and recorded his first pro win in front of 6,169 fans at U. S. Steel Yard in the RailCats home finale on August 20, retiring six of the seven batters he faced in extra innings, including three by strikeout, as the RailCats edged St. Paul 6-5.

The 6'5" right-hander retired 23 of the final 25 batters he faced, yielding just one hit while striking out seven in seven and two-thirds innings over his final five appearances of the season. The stretch included saves against Sioux City and St. Paul, the latter a 1-2-3 ninth-inning to close out the RailCats 4-3 win at St. Paul in the regular season finale.

Andel attended North Central College in Naperville, Ill., and currently resides in the southwest suburban community of Oswego.

Andel joins Brian Houdek, Tom Klemm, Tony O'Donnell, Daniel Soria, and Eric White as pitchers who have signed 2004 contracts with the RailCats.
