Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

Rafael Rodriguez had two hits and four runs batted in and Greg Bicknell picked up his league-leading ninth win of the season as the Kansas City T-Bones defeated the Gary SouthShore RailCats 9-2 on Sunday in the final game of the first half in the Northern League's split-season format.

The RailCats finished the half with a 27-21 record, tied with Lincoln for third place in the Southern Division, one and one-half games behind St. Paul. Kansas City finished in second place, one-half game out of first.

The 27 wins shattered the RailCats club record for most wins in a half. The previous mark was 21 in the second half in 2003.

The RailCats briefly held a lead on Sunday. After Kansas City scored one run in the top of the first inning, Gary scored two in the bottom half. Eric McNamee singled and went to third when Rodriguez, the Kansas City shortstop, lost Tanner Townsend's pop-up in the sun. After Steve Haake struck out, Jose Yepez grounded out to short to bring in McNamee and tie the game. Alex Taylor followed with a ground ball that skipped by first baseman Scott Lucas for an error, allowing Townsend to score to make it 2-1.

Kansas City answered with two runs in the second against RailCats starter Quintin Oldenburg (8-3). The T-Bones added two more in the sixth against RailCats reliever John Gonzalez, and tacked on a pair of runs in the eighth off Cody Fisher and two in the ninth off Travis Kerber to close out the scoring.

Bicknell threw 104 pitches over the first five innings and stranded eight runners before leaving after a perfect sixth inning to earn the win. He allowed six hits and both runs (one earned) with three walks and five strikeouts.

The RailCats do not play on Monday. They begin the second half on Tuesday at Edmonton at 8:05 PM CDT.
