
RailCats hold off JackHammers

GARY, IN -The Joliet JackHammers (15-25)b scored three runs in the 9th inning but lost 5-3 to the Gary SouthShore RailCats (19-21) before 3,916 fans at U.S. Steel Yard on Saturday night.
The RailCats got on the board with a solo home run in the 3rd inning from CF Rob Marconi (2-3). Marconi pulled a breaking ball over the left field wall for his 2nd home run of the season in a 1-0 RailCats advantage.
In the 4th inning, the RailCats added another run against the Joliet starter Jason Novak (1-2). 1B Steve Haake (2-4) led off the inning with a double and moved to third base on a groundout by LF Jordan Czarniecki (0-3). He scored on a sacrifice fly by RF Christian Guerrero (0-3) for a 2-0 lead.
Novak gave up an unearned run in the 5th inning and departed after five innings, allowing three runs, (two earned runs), on three hits. He walked three and struck out one man.
Gary pushed across single runs in the 7th and 8th inning to take a 5-0 lead. In the 7th inning, DH Mike Massaro (1-3) hit an RBI single to plate Marconi, who hit a two-out double against LHP Ryan Paul.
In the 8th inning, Haake hit an RBI single against RHP Chad Blackwell that scored SS Jay Pecci (1-3) from second base. Pecci led off the inning with a double.
The JackHammers mounted three runs in the 9th inning to make the game close. 2B Gary Harris (3-4) singled against LHP Tony Cogan and moved to third base on a single by SS Kevin Rios (1-4). Manager Greg Taggert lifted Cogan in favor of RHP Aaron Cook.
New JackHammer LF Brad Correll (1-2) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field to score Harris to put the JackHammers on the board at 5-1. 3B Andrew Pinckney (1-4) singled to move Rios to second base. After C Phil Avlas (0-4) popped out, DH Tydus Meadows (1-3) singled to load the bases.
1B Freddie Thon (-4) responded with a two-run single to bring in Rios and Pinckney and get the JackHammers within two runs at 5-3.
