Schaumburg Flyers News Release
SCHAUMBURG, IL - Craig Hurba walloped two home runs and drove in five, and the Kansas City T-Bones topped the Flyers 8-6 in a rain-shortened game on Saturday night at Alexian Field. Kansas City has now won four of five, while the Flyers have dropped five of their last six.
For the second consecutive night, the T-Bones got out to an early lead with runs in the first. After Flyers starter Tom Lyons walked Greg Jacobs with two outs, Craig Hurba hit his first home run of the night to make it 2-0.
But the Flyers would answer in a big way in the bottom half, batting around and getting things done with the small-ball approach. Travis Ezi scored the Flyers' first run on a Jose Valdez single after walking and stealing second. Valdez would come around to score on a Victor Ferrante single. Jason Colson and Richard Mercado also drove in runs in the inning with a single and a walk respectively, bringing the score to 4-2.
Kansas City got two in the fourth - one on a James Fasano double, and one on a Mark Minicozzi single - to tie the game at four. Damian Rolls and Greg Jacobs both singled with one out in the fifth in front of Hurba's second homer, a three-run opposite-field blast to give the T-Bones a 7-4 advantage. Minicozzi led off the sixth with a solo shot to extend K.C.'s lead to 8-4.
The Flyers showed their first life since the first as the storm clouds began to roll into the area in the bottom of the sixth. TJ Wilson led off the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a single from Craig Maddux, who was making his first plate appearance as a Flyer. An Ezi fielders-choice groundout brought Wilson home, and Vince Harrison scored Ezi on a sac-fly to make it 8-6 T-Bones.
The Flyers wouldn't have another chance as the tarp was pulled at the completion of the sixth. The game was called official an hour later.
Tom Lyons (1-3) gave up seven runs over 4.1 and is tagged with the loss. Dustin Bolton (2-2) gets the win despite giving up six runs over 5.2. Weston Curles gets his first save, picking up one out in the sixth.
LHP Carmen Pignatiello (3-2, 5.36) opposes Kansas City's LHP Ryan Knippschild (1-1, 3.41) tomorrow on Family Faith Day at Alexian Field, with the first pitch being thrown at 1:20.
