Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release

The RailCats have announced the schedule for the 4th Annual RailCats High School Baseball Challenge. The Challenge is sponsored by Lake County Sheriff Roy Dominguez, Lake County Prosecutor Bernard Carter, and the Post-Tribune.

The Challenge will feature 21 games and 42 schools. Opening day is April 4th when Crown Point meets Hebron. The Challenge will conclude on April 22nd.

The Challenge allows high school players from the area to experience the thrill of playing in a professional facility, the RailCats state-of-the-art 6,000 seat stadium, U. S. Steel Yard. Each school in Lake and Porter Counties was invited to play one game, as has been customary in past years. Thirty-nine of the 42 schools participating are back for their third or fourth year in the Challenge.

"The Challenge is a lot of fun for the players and provides the RailCats with the chance to introduce new fans throughout our market to one of the top minor league facilities in the nation, U. S. Steel Yard," said Roger Wexelberg, RailCats Vice President and General Manager.

For the first time, the RailCats have designated a game during their Northern League season as High School Baseball Challenge Night. On Wednesday, June 7th, a representative from each high school team in the Challenge will be recognized on the field prior to the RailCats game against Joliet.

The Challenge also serves as a fundraiser for participating schools. Schools are provided with 50 tickets to their game in the Challenge and 50 tickets to the RailCats game on June 7th. Schools will generate a $300.00 profit for their program by selling all 100 tickets.

All Challenge tickets are three dollars if purchased from the schools or five dollars at the gate. A season pass for all 21 games is available for $20.00 by calling (219) 882-2255.
