Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, IN- Patrick Fiala hit a bases loaded double with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to carry the Sioux Falls Canaries (35-59) to a 4-1 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (49-45).
Following the RailCats loss, the Lincoln Saltdogs rose to sole possession of first place in the American Association's Central Division after beating the Sioux City X's.
Charle Rosario was solid in an eight-inning complete game effort for the RailCats. He allowed four runs (three earned) on nine hits. He walked two and struck out five batters.
Kris Regas was excellent and notched a quality start for the Canaries. He pitched six scoreless innings and scattered seven hits. He only walked one batter compared to four strikeouts. He pitched seven scoreless innings last time he saw the RailCats, on August 18th.
The RailCats had the best chance to take the first lead of the game. They loaded the bases on two singles and a walk in the fourth inning. Tony Cheky grounded into a double play to end the frame and keep the game scoreless.
Sioux Falls broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth. Mike Falsetti reached on an error on Rosario and moved to second base on a sacrifice. After a strikeout, BJ Guinn hit a single that was misplayed by outfielder Chase Harris to allow Falsetti to score.
The RailCats evened the score in the eighth inning. Kris Goodman reached on a walk and moved to second on a Frank Martinez line out. Alex Crosby put the Cats on the board with an RBI base hit to tie the game at 1-1.
The tie was short-lived, as the Canaries scored three in the next frame. After Rosario retired the first two batters, JC Linares got on with a base hit. Blake Schmit singled and Cameron Monger walked to load the bases for Fiala. The third baseman delivered with a bases-clearing double off the wall to make it 4-1.
Jarred Mederos walked in the ninth but was stranded to end the game. The RailCats left nine runners aboard in the contest.
Crosby continued his hot streak and Jose Gonzalez broke out of his slump. Both hitters recorded multi-hit games with Crosby adding an RBI. Mederos went 3-3 with a walk in the bottom of the RailCats' order. The shortstop was the only RailCat to tally an extra-base hit with a third inning double.
The RailCats continue their fight for the playoffs tomorrow night in Sioux Falls. First pitch is at 7:05 PM and coverage begins at 6:40 PM on 95.9 WEFM and railcatsbaseball.com.
