Rail Yard Dawgs Game Notes: Rail Yard Dawgs (24-23-4) at Marksmen (11-34-6)
March 29, 2018 - SPHL (SPHL)
Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs News Release
LAST TIME OUT: The Rail Yard Dawgs scored twice late in the second period to erase a 2-1 deficit and retake the lead as they held on to drop the Knoxville Ice Bears, 3-2, Saturday night at Berglund Center. Joe Sova had a goal and an assist and netted the game-winning goal. Brad Barone made 18 saves on 20 shots to get the win in net.
MAGIC NUMBER - 6: Roanoke's magic number to clinch a spot in the postseason is six. The Rail Yard Dawgs currently have 52 points and ninth-place Birmingham has 49 with four games remaining. This means the highest point total the Bulls can finish the season with is 57. Any combination of six points picked up by the Rail Yard Dawgs or lost by the Bulls would put Roanoke in the playoffs. If the Dawgs win three of their five remaining games, they are in no matter what Birmingham does with its remaining four.
FINALLY DONE WITH FAYETTEVILLE: Thursday's game is the 13th and final meeting of the season between the Rail Yard Dawgs and Marksmen. Roanoke has gone 8-4-0 in the 12 previous meetings including a 4-1-0 mark in Fayetteville. The Dawgs last played the Marksmen on February 9, a 5-3 win in Roanoke. That game was the third in a current stretch of 17 during which the Marksmen have gone 1-15-1
THE REST OF THE WAY: The Rail Yard Dawgs will have four games remaining in their regular season after Thursday's game in Fayetteville- all of which will take place against the Peoria Rivermen. Roanoke heads home for games against Peoria on Friday and Saturday following Thursday's tilt in North Carolina. The Dawgs will finish with a pair of games in Peoria on April 6 and 7.
AT THE OLD STOMPING GROUNDS: Roanoke's roster features three players who spent time with the Marksmen earlier this season in defenseman Taylor Love, goaltender Matt Zenzola and forward Chris Porter. Love played eight games for Fayetteville, Zenzola five and Porter 93 over parts of three seasons before being traded to the Dawgs in exchange for Ben Bauer and Mitchell Mueller on 2/22.
GET YOUR TEE TIMES: The Marksmen are the only team in the SPHL that has been eliminated from postseason contention. Fayetteville is last in the league in both goals scored per game (2.7) and goals allowed per game (4.6).
NOT A LOT OF SHOTS: Roanoke put only 14 shots on net in the 3-2 win over Knoxville on Saturday, its lowest shots on goal total in a game this season. The Dawgs improved to 15-13-4 when being out-shot by an opponent and have now won four straight games during such occasions.
UP NEXT: The Rail Yard Dawgs return to Virginia for their final two home games of the regular season. Friday night's puck drop against the Peoria Rivermen is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
