Raiders Drop Game 2 In Overtime

Prince Albert Raiders News Release

Moose Jaw, SK - The Prince Albert Raiders earned a split of the opening weekend of the 2018 WHL Playoffs following a 3-2 overtime loss to the Moose Jaw Warriors at Mosaic Place on Saturday night.

The best-of-seven series is now tied at 1-1.

A fast-paced first period yielded just one goal as the Warriors took the advantage late in the frame. Brett Howden scored with 1:05 left when he deposited a shot in the blue ice that squeaked through Ian Scott.

Early in the second, the Warriors' captain struck again. Howden put his side ahead 2-0 11 seconds into the middle frame.

The Raiders got on the board at the 12:00 mark of the second. Sean Montgomery buried a rebound off of a Sergei Sapego shot to cut the lead in half.

In the third, Vojtech Budik tied the game. On a Raiders' power play, the Buffalo Sabres draft pick's blast from the top of the right faceoff circle got through a screen in front and Warriors goaltender Brody Willms at the 4:49 mark.

The goaltenders took over for the rest of the period. Scott stopped all 12 Warrior shots in the period as they pushed for the go-ahead goal throughout the period.

After regulation solved nothing, the game headed into overtime. The Raiders appeared to have a great opportunity when a too many men penalty was called on the Warriors. However, after a discussion between the officials, the penalty was overturned.

That set the stage for Justin Almeida's game winner. Almedia was sprung on a breakaway and fought off a defender to beat Scott to end the game 7:30 into the extra period.

In total, Scott made 38 saves in the loss. Willms stopped 28 shots in the other goal.

The best-of-seven series now shifts to the Art Hauser Centre for Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday and Wednesday night, respectively. Both games begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at raiderhockey.com, the Raider Office, or by calling 306-764-5348.
