Rage Net Second Goaltender

September 12, 2008 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Rocky Mountain Rage News Release

Broomfield, Colo. - The Rocky Mountain Rage have signed third-year netminder Marty Magers, who joins Scott Reid to form the team's goaltending tandem for the upcoming 2008-09 Central Hockey League season. The signing gives the Rage 17 players on their current roster.

Magers actually decided not to turn pro right out of junior hockey where he spent time in both the United States Hockey League and Ontario Hockey League. But he caught the playing bug again after a year-and-a-half hiatus and signed with the Bakersfield Condors of the ECHL mid-way through the 2005-06 campaign. The Chicago native had sparkling numbers in Bakersfield, going 8-1-0 with a 2.19 goals against average and .932 save percentage.

He then played his first two full seasons as a professional in the International Hockey League (formerly the United Hockey League) where last year he registered a mark of 14-11-3 with a 2.89 goals against average and .904 save percentage for the Port Huron Icehawks.

Prior to turning pro, the 25-year-old helped lead the USHL's Omaha Lancers to the Clark Cup Championship in 2000-01. He then posted a record of 21-6-2 the next season as the Lancers raced to the league's regular season crown before falling in overtime in a decisive Game Five of the Clark Cup Finals. Magers caught the eye of NHL scouts during that 01-02 campaign when he set franchise records for goals against average (1.62) and save percentage (.927) - marks that still stand - and was taken by the Buffalo Sabres in the fourth round of the 2002 draft.

"Marty's a talented goalie who along with Scott Reid gives us a real strong one-two punch in net," said Rage Head Coach and General Manager Tracy Egeland. "Getting drafted speaks for itself, and he's just now getting to that age where goaltenders usually play the best hockey of their careers."
