Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees News Release
HIDALGO, TEXAS --- The Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees of the Central Hockey League (CHL), Televisa XERV-9 (cable 19) and Texas Ford Dealers today announced that at least seven Killer Bees Saturday home games will be televised live, with an option for six more.
This is the fifth year that XERV has carried Killer Bees hockey. The station, based in Reynosa, Tamaulipas, became the first Mexican-based TV station to produce a live hockey broadcast when it began carrying Killer Bee hockey in 2004. In a unique nod to the abundance of bi-lingual residents of Northern Mexico and in the Rio Grande Valley, games are broadcast in English while commercials are primarily in Spanish.
"Hockey has grown in popularity in the Rio Grande Valley and over the border in Mexico in large part to the efforts of XERV-9," Killer Bees General Manager Grant W. Buckborough said. "Although nothing can replicate the feel and excitement of being at a live hockey game, having our games on Televisa has been instrumental in educating our fans and the general public about the ins and outs of the game. We're excited that Texas Ford Dealers are back on board for the season to help show the Valley and Northern Mexico what a great game this is."
In the Rio Grande Valley, XERV is carried on cable channel 19 on Time Warner Cable. The station is available over the air on channel 9 and also on digital channel 19.
Killer Bees play-by-play announcer Rich Bocchini will call the action for the fourth season, while Alex Del Barrio will provide color commentary along with other guest announcers filling in when Del Barrio is not available.
The Killer Bees open their sixth season at Dodge Arena on October 18 vs. the Rocky Mountain Rage. Season tickets are available now by calling 956-843-PUCK (7825).
