JACKSONVILLE - The Jacksonville Sharks and the Arena Football League announced Tuesday that Jacksonville quarterback R.J. Archer has been named the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week for Week 20 of the 2014 AFL season. Archer received the honor following his performance in the Sharks' 53-36 victory over the LA KISS on Saturday, July 26.
In Saturday's game, Archer completed 25 of his 36 pass attempts for a total of 318 yards and six touchdowns without an interception. Excluding two brief series leading into the end of each half, Archer led the Sharks' offense on seven consecutive touchdown drives to help Jacksonville emerge with a 17-point victory. Over the course of the game, Archer spread the ball around to six different receivers, as four players combined to haul in his six touchdown tosses.
Overall, Archer compiled a 69.2 percent completion percentage and a 136.3 pass efficiency rating in Saturday's game. Each figure stands as the quarterback's second-best single-game performance in those respective categories this season.
This performance capped a season in which Archer started 17 of the Sharks' 18 games, completing 367 of his 634 passes for a total of 4,661 yards and 92 touchdowns against 14 interceptions. Archer finished the 2014 regular season ranking fourth in the League in passing yards per game (258.9), fifth in passing touchdowns (92), fifth in yards per completion (12.7) and ninth in pass efficiency (108.0).
Archer has become the fourth Shark to win a weekly League award in 2014. Defensive back Terrance Smith was named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week and earned the AFL Highlight of the Week for his performance against the Spokane Shock in Week 13, while wide receiver Jomo Wilson was named the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week for his Week 17 performance against the San Antonio Talons.
