TONIGHT'S GAME: The third of a three game home and home series and the only game in Richmond. The Braves won the first two at Harbor Park. The 13th of 16 meetings, the sixth of eight at The Diamond. Richmond is 8-4 vs. the Tides, 4-1 at home. Game one of a five game homestand The 39th of 48 meetings vs. South Division clubs (Braves are 20-18 vs. the South) and the 20th of 24 home contests vs. South Division clubs (Richmond is 11-8). The Braves were 5-11 vs. the Tides last season, 2-6 at Harbor Park. The Braves are 359-403 all-time vs. Norfolk. The Braves are third in the South, 23 games behind first place Charlotte. The Tides are fourth in the South, 26.5 games out.
LAST NIGHT'S GAME: The Braves beat the Tides 5-1 at Harbor Park Wednesday. The Braves earned their third straight win and eighth in their last nine games behind seven innings of shutout pitching by Daniel Curtis. The Braves Martin Prado drilled a two run homer in the first, giving the Braves all the offense they would need. Richmond tacked on three more runs in the fourth. James Jurries knocked in a run with a single. Gregor Blanco and Wes Timmons forced in runs with bases loaded walks to give the Braves a 5-0 lead. The Tides averted a shutout in the ninth on an RBI single by Jacob Cruz. Curtis allowed just three hits in seven innings to earn the win. Oliver Perez took the loss. Brayan Pena and Bill McCarthy each had three hits for the Braves.
A HOT SPELL: Brayan Pena has hits in 11 straight games (20-46 .436) equaling the club's longest hitting streak of the season (11 games by Scott Thorman). He has seven hits in his last nine at bats. Bill McCarthy has a five game hitting streak (9-19 .474). James Jurries has a three game hitting streak (4-11 .364). .Martin Prado, who hit his first Triple-A home run Tuesday, became the fourth R-Brave to homer in back to back games last night (joining Scott Thorman, Michael Ryan, and Jonathan Schuerholz). Thorman is the only Brave to homer in three straight games this season. Prado has four hits in his last nine at bats. Phil Stockman has not allowed a run on the road with Richmond this season (seven appearances, 14 innings pitched on the road). Jonathan Johnson has worked five straight scoreless outings over 8.1 innings. Richmond is hitting .326 over their last nine games. They are averaging 10.7 hits per game over that span. The Braves are second in the IL in extra inning games played with 16 (one behind Rochester). Braves pitchers are hitting .217 with one RBI (13-60). Braves pinch hitters are hitting .128 (6-47).
ON A ROLL: The Braves have won three straight games and eight of their last nine. They have won three in a row for the fifth time this season. They have won four straight once previously this season. The Braves have a three game road winning streak for the first time this season. Richmond was 4-1 on the five game road trip, their first .500-plus trip of the season. They have beaten Norfolk five straight times. Richmond has won five straight home games and nine of their last 11. They have already surpassed last season's total number of home wins (28). The Braves are going after their first series sweep of the season. The last time the Braves swept an opponent was last July 18-21 in a four game home and home series with Durham.
THE ROSTER: The Braves are currently carrying 25 players (the IL limit of 24 plus Phil Stockman on an MLB rehab). Richmond has made 93 roster moves this season and has produced 17 players called up to Atlanta.
