Quakes Take Two of Three, Fall One out Shy of No-Hitter

San Bernardino, CA- The Quakes fell an out shy of the first ever combined nine-inning no-hitter in franchise history on Sunday, but showcased a dominant display of pitching and offense in a 8-2 victory over the Inland Empire 66ers.

With Jason Richman on the mound for Rancho and Inland Empire down to their final out, Jo Adell managed to punch a two-run home run over the right-field wall for the first 66ers' hit on the game. Richman retired the following hitter, Brandon Marsh, to close the game and pull Rancho to three games out of first with 20 to play.

Starting pitcher Dean Kremer was brilliant for the Quakes over the first six innings of the contest. Kremer allowed just one walk and struck out a career-high ten hitters, departing in the seventh for reliever Ryan Moseley. Moseley went on to face the minimum in the inning and was replaced by Richman after recording the first out of the eighth.

Quakes pitching was backed by a consistent offensive presence that began on a Gavin Lux RBI triple in the third, scoring Nick Yarnell.  Lux promptly scored on a wild pitch by 66ers starting pitcher Erik Manoah, putting the Quakes up 2-0.

Without a hit on the series, Connor Wong rebounded with his team leading eleventh home run of the season in the sixth, to put the Quakes up 3-0.

Awaiting potential history, the Quakes put the game out of reach with five total runs in the top of the ninth. Donovan Casey singled home Logan Landon following a leadoff double, and Cody Thomas and Gavin Lux capped the scoring with a pair of two-run home runs.

On the mound for Inland Empire, Manoah (1-4) was charged with the loss while the career outing for Kremer (3-2) assured him his third victory of the year.

With the win, Rancho secured two of three games over the weekend series against the South Division's first place team and now sits at 22-28 on the year, three games out of first place.

The Quakes return to LoanMart field on Monday for the start of a four game series hosting the Lake Elsinore Storm. Fontana native Chris Mathewson (1-0, 4.24 ERA) will get the start for the Quakes, his third on the year. He will be opposed by Ronald Bolanos (0-3, 7.28 ERA) of Lake Elsinore.
