Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Bakersfield, CA - Devan Ahart's two-out double plated the tie-breaking run in the top of the ninth inning, as the Quakes rallied for a 3-2 opening night win at Sam Lynn Ballpark in Bakersfield.
Ahart, who collected a pair of hits on the night, ripped an Emilio Pagan (0-1) pitch past first base and down the right-field line, scoring pinch-runner Brandon Trinkwon for Rancho's only lead of the night.
Randy Fontenez (1-0) who worked a scoreless eighth inning, worked around a lead-off walk in the ninth to secure his first win in relief.
Thursday's opener was dominated by pitching, as each starter had a terrific debut for their respective clubs.
Quakes' starter Juan De Leon was incredible, fanning ten batters over just five innings. De Leon didn't allow a base-runner until the fifth, when he walked Jay Baum, breaking up the perfect bid. Tyler Marlette spoiled the would-be no-hit effort, as he lined a single to right field. There were a pair of errant throws on the play, with third baseman Paul Hoenecke getting charged with an error for one of them, as both Baum and Marlette came into score a pair of unearned runs, putting the Blaze up, 2-0.
Blaze starter Edwin Diaz struck out eight over five full innings, leaving with the two-run advantage.
Rancho finally got things going against the Blaze bullpen, with Joey Curletta opening the sixth with his second hit of the game, a towering homer to center field off of Rafael Pineda, bringing Rancho within a run at 2-1.
The Quakes tied the score in the seventh, as Adam Law legged out an infield single, bringing home Dillon Moyer to even the game at 2-2 against Blaze reliever Paul Fry.
Hoenecke opened the ninth with a walk and was lifted in favor of Trinkwon. With one out, Trinkwon advanced to second on a wild pitch and then after a walk to Law, scored the game-winner on Ahart's double.
De Leon, Michael Johnson and Fontanez combined for 14 strikeouts, while walking just two batters on the night. The Blaze finished with just two hits.
The Quakes (1-0) send Zach Bird (0-0) to the hill in Friday's contest, while Bakersfield will counter with lefty Ryan Yarbrough (0-0) with first pitch scheduled for 7:15pm.
After a seven-game road trip to start the season, the Quakes will return to LoanMart Field for their home opener on Thursday, April 16th at 7:05pm.
