Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Stockton, CA - C.J. Retherford's two-run homer in the seventh capped Wednesday's come-back, as Rancho held on for their third straight road victory, a 3-2 decision over the Stockton Ports at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton.
The win for the Quakes keeps them three games back of first-place High Desert with ten games to go in the first half and gets Rancho to the .500 mark for the first time since April 15th, when they were just 5-5, ten games into the season.
Trailing 2-1, Joc Pederson hit the first pitch he saw from Stockton starter Josh Bowman into center field for a single. Retherford followed and crushed the first pitch he saw from Bowman, out to left field for his tenth homer of the year and a 3-2 lead.
Reliever Robert Purpura (1-0), making his Quakes' debut on Wednesday night, worked a 1-2-3 sixth inning and then pitched around a couple of two-out singles in the seventh to hold the lead.
Scott McGough pitched the final two innings for his fifth save in five tries this year. McGough allowed a lead-off single in the ninth, but retired the next three hitters to leave the league's leading hitter, Miles Head, in the on-deck circle to end the game.
Bowman (0-6) was sharp for most of the night, as he didn't allow a base-runner until the fifth inning, when Mike Pericht sent his first pitch over the left-field fence for his tenth home run of the year, tying the game at 1-1.
Quakes' starter Garrett Gould, who gave up a run in the second inning, couldn't keep the game tied, as Head drove home a two-out run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth, giving the Ports a 2-1 advantage.
Gould allowed two runs on five hits over five innings in the no-decision, striking out seven while walking three.
Rancho (30-30) eyes their first sweep on the road this year, sending Zach Lee (2-2) to the hill in Thursday's series finale, against Ports right-hander Blake Treilen (5-4) at 7:05pm.
The Quakes return to The Epicenter on Friday, June 8th, when they open a six-game home stand against the first-place High Desert Mavericks. Friday, June 8th is Quakes Cooler Bag Giveaway, thanks to Safeco Insurance. Tickets are available by calling 909-481-5000 online at rcquakes.com. Go Quakes!
