San Jose Giants News Release
LANCASTER - The San Jose Giants snapped their 10-game losing streak with an 11-5 victory over the Lancaster JetHawks on Wednesday evening at The Hangar. San Jose jumped out to a 6-0 lead after 1 1/2 innings and never looked back en route to picking-up the win. The Giants (33-27) remain 1 1/2 games behind the Bakersfield Blaze (34-25) in the first half North Division race.
Ricky Oropesa (3-for-5, 2 HR, 4 RBI) homered twice to lead a 16-hit San Jose offensive attack. Adam Duvall (3-for-5, 2B, RBI) also contributed three hits while Carter Jurica (2-for-2, 2B, 2 RBI) and Alex Burg (1-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI) each drove home two runs.
Jack Snodgrass (6-2) recorded his team-leading sixth win of the season after striking out a career-high seven batters in seven innings of work. He allowed 10 hits and five runs (four earned) with one walk. Snodgrass retired nine straight batters at one point during his outing.
Six of the first seven Giants batters of the game reached base with four scoring runs. Ryan Lollis began the contest with a single to right before Andrew Susac reached on a one-out infield single to put runners on first and second. Oropesa followed with a sharp single to left as Lollis scored to make it 1-0. Duvall then ripped an RBI double to deep right center and after Jarrett Parker walked to load the bases, Jurica singled up the middle to score two more runs for a 4-0 advantage.
San Jose added to their lead in the top of the second as Susac singled with two outs before Oropesa stepped to the plate and crushed a two- run homer to deep right center field.
Snodgrass was able to strand two runners on base in the bottom of the first inning, but the JetHawks scored three times in the second to cut the Giants lead in half. Three consecutive singles from Enrique Hernandez, Chris Epps and Rene Garcia to start the inning produced the first run. A single from Grant Hogue then loaded the bases before Ben Orloff singled up the middle to score Epps. However on the play, Garcia was tagged out in-between third base and home after a long rundown before Snodgrass fanned George Springer for the second out. Jonathan Meyer was up next and during his at-bat, a passed ball on the catcher Susac allowed Hogue to score bringing Lancaster to within 6-3.
Snodgrass settled down to retire the JetHawks 1-2-3 in the third and fourth innings before San Jose took back control of the game with a four-run top of the fifth. Duvall started the rally with a one-out single and immediately scored when the next batter, Parker, smacked a double to deep left center. Bobby Haney followed with a single and then Burg ripped a double into the left center field gap to score two more runs. Two batters later, Lollis lined an RBI double to the fence in right extending the Giants lead to 10-3.
Snodgrass worked around a one-out single in the bottom of the fifth but surrendered a leadoff home run to Telvin Nash in the sixth as Lancaster cut the San Jose lead to six. Then with two outs, Epps singled before Garcia's RBI double to left center made it 10-5. Hogue followed with an infield single, but Snodgrass got out of the inning by inducing Orloff to line out softly to third.
Snodgrass then fanned two in a perfect bottom of the seventh to achieve a new career-high in strikeouts.
San Jose scored their 11th and final run of the night when Oropesa launched a solo homer to deep right field in the top of the eighth. The home run was Oropesa's second of the game and sixth of the season.
Drew Bowlin (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) needed just eight pitches to breeze through a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth before Chris Wilson (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO) tossed a perfect ninth inning to seal the victory. Snodgrass, Bowlin and Wilson combined to set down the last 10 JetHawks batters of the game.
Lollis (2-for-5, 2B, RBI), Susac (2-for-5) and Parker (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) also finished with more than one hit for the Giants. San Jose out-hit Lancaster by a 16-10 margin.
