Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- Stockton got off to a quick start at the Epicenter on Wednesday night after Josh Horton scored on a sacrifice fly by Matt Spencer in the bottom of the 1st. The Ports scored their second run on a line drive down the right field foul line by Matt Sulentic that scored Archie Gilbert in the top of the 2nd .

It wasn't long before the Quakes got on the board. After Drew Toussaint hit a chopper over 3B Chris Carter's head for a double, he later scored on a PJ Phillips' RBI ground out to make the score 2-1.

After starting the 4th inning off with two singles by Matt Spencer and Josh Donaldson, the Ports' Archie Gilbert hit a deep triple off the center field wall to bring both runners home and give the Ports a 4-1 lead. Jermaine Mitchell followed with a sacrifice fly scoring Gilbert to make it 5-1 Ports.

Tommy Mendoza was pulled after 3.1 IP and allowed 9 H, 6 R, 6 ER, 2 BB, while only striking out one Port. Bobby Cassevah came on in relief to retire the final two Ports in the 4th inning.

Mark Trumbo struck back with a lead-off home run, his 24th, over the centerfield wall in the bottom half of the inning to bring the Quakes closer.

Hank Conger led off the bottom of the 8th for the Quakes by reaching base on an error by Ports' 3B Chris Carter. Consecutive walks to Trumbo and Toussaint loaded the bases with no outs, setting the stage for Larry Infante. Infante drove in Conger on a broken bat fielder's choice. Phillips continued to swing the bat well and followed with a single into right field bringing Trumbo home to make the score 6-4 Ports. The Quakes' rally was thwarted as C Alberto Rosario grounded into an inning ending double play.

In the top of the 9th the Ports scored on two hits and an error by Trumbo to stretch their lead to 8-4. The Quakes posed a threat in the bottom of the 9th after Ryan Mount singled to center field and Conger reached base on an error by Josh Horton of the Ports, but RHP Patrick Currin silenced slugger Trumbo for the final out of the game to leave runners on first and third get his 4th save of the season.

Bobby Cassevah was strong out of the bullpen and pitched a solid 3 2/3 innings with 2 H, 4 SO and 1 BB.

The Quakes will host the Ports tomorrow night for the final game of the series with LHP Alexander Torres taking the mound for Rancho and RHP Craig Italiano throwing for the Ports. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m.
