Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes dropped the three-game series to the Inland Empire 66ers, falling in the rubber match by a final tally of 3-1 on Thursday evening.
On a night where several key bats were missing from their lineup, the Quakes' (61-42, 20-15) offense fell silent for eight consecutive frames en route to the defeat at the hands of the Sixers (39-65, 13-22).
With one out in the bottom of the second, Marcus Chiu reached via an error and advanced to second due to a wild pitch. Stevie Berman followed up by notching an RBI single to give Rancho a 1-0 lead.
Three innings later, Inland Empire knotted up the score when Franklin Torres tallied an RBI single of his own, making it a 1-1 tie after the completion of the top-of-the-fifth inning.
The score stayed that way through regulation, needing additional innings to decide the result. In the top of the tenth, Devin Davis broke the tie, singling home Torres, while Mike Stefanic scored an additional run due to a wild pitch.
With the tally at 3-1 heading into the bottom half, the Quakes would have a golden opportunity not only to knot up the score, but perhaps to walk it off. However, with the bases loaded and two outs, Dillon Paulson flew out to left field to end the contest.
Both starters were solid in the Thursday-evening tilt, as Rancho's Leo Crawford went five frames, while Inland's Cooper Criswell last 4.2 innings. Crawford allowed one run on six hits, and he struck out just three batters. Criswell surrendered one unearned run on seven hits, punching out four hitters.
Jorge Tavarez (1-2) grabbed the win with 1.2 scoreless innings and a trio of strikeouts.
The loss fell upon the shoulders of Connor Strain (0-4), as he gave up the two runs (one earned) in the extra frame.
Nate Bertness corralled his second save of the season, and second save in as many days, getting Paulson to fly out on the first pitch he threw.
For the series opener with Stockton, RHP Michael Grove (0-4) gets the start, looking to follow up three scoreless frames his last time out. As for the Ports, RHP Xavier Altamirano (5-6) toes the slab for his 19th overall start.
