Quad City Steamwheelers News Release

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - In Week Nine, the Wheelers snapped their two-game skid against the Sioux Falls Storm.

The Storm got going loud and quick, starting the game with two quick touchdowns to establish a 14-0 lead over Quad Cities. Later on in the first quarter, Mike Irwin threw a dime of a pass to Jordan Vesey, which led to a touchdown pass to Edward Vander.

Mike Irwin ended the game with almost 180 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, and a rushing touchdown of his own.

After Kyle Kaplan kicked a successful PAT, the Steamwheelers got on the board, trailing by a touchdown going into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, the Storm moved down the field quickly, and they scored just as fast, putting them up 21-7 at this point in the game. Shortly after this, the Steamwheelers worked their way down the field and capped off the drive with another touchdown by Vander.

Edward Vander put his hands on display, ending with three touchdowns, 87 receiving yards, and almost 30 rushing yards.

Later in the period, Mike Irwin threw a great pass to Jordan Vesey, who made a highlight catch. A jumping, diving catch over the Storm defensive back, and Vesey held onto the ball as he fell out of bounds. Scoring another touchdown in the process, Quad City tied the game at 21.

Jordan Vesey ended the evening with two touchdowns on three receptions, along with 48 receiving yards.

The Storm kicked a field goal to take the lead 24-21 going into the second half.

The Steamwheelers started off the second half with a bang, as Jarrod Harington gave the Wheelers the lead with a 58-yard kick return touchdown. Another successful extra point by Kaplan put the Wheelers up 28-24 over the Storm.

Soon after, however, the Storm struck again, scoring another touchdown and taking a two-point lead over the Steamwheelers 30-28.

The Wheelers fired right back with another Vander touchdown to take the lead, and a successful PAT extended the lead to 35-30.

The Steamwheeler defense showed off tonight, as it was an all-hands-on-deck effort with every defensive player picking up at least two tackles on the night. Jaylin Swan led the way with four solo tackles, two assisted tackles, and a sack.

The next drive for the Storm was a rough one with the Steamwheeler defense forcing a turnover on downs and Kaplan kicking a field goal right through the uprights to extend the lead to 38-30.

The fourth quarter is where this game reached its peak with Malik Duncan starting it off with an interception for Quad City. This led to Irwin running the ball in on the other end for a touchdown and an extra point by Kaplan to make it a 45-30 game.

Sioux Falls didn't go down without a fight, however, as they came back and scored another touchdown to chop the lead down to 45-37. The Wheelers extended the lead with another field goal from Kaplan, making it a 48-37 game in the middle of the fourth quarter.

The Storm came back and worked their way into the endzone for a touchdown, chopping the lead to 48-43. Then, they recovered a fumble as the Steamwheelers lost the ball on the snap, leading to a Sioux Falls touchdown to take the lead 49-48 late in the game.

It came down under a minute for Quad City to try and score to take the lead again and Irwin connected with Vander for a touchdown to put them on top again. After a successful two-point conversion the Steamwheelers were up 56-49.

Trey Smith ended the game with a game-ending interception.

This win for the Steamwheelers brings them to 3-4 on the season and brings the Storm to 1-6 on the year.

Quad City takes the field next week on Friday, May 17, for Military Night against the Iowa Barnstormers. Week 10 takes place at Vibrant Arena at the MARK, kicking off at 7:05 p.m. CT.
