Clearwater Threshers News Release
CLEARWATER, Fla. - Andrew Pullin blasted a solo home run in the first inning, but Clearwater was held off the board the rest of the way in a 5-1 loss to the Tampa Yankees on Friday night at Bright House Field.
Yacksel Rios opened the outing by retiring the first 11 men he faced, before Dustin Fowler lined a soft single into right with two down in the fourth.
With Fowler running, Mike Ford followed with a grounder that escaped the left side of the infield, and Miguel Andujar pulled a double up the third base line just out of the reach of Mitch Walding to plate Fowler. Ford crossed the dish as well when the ball was misplayed by Pullin in the left field corner.
Kyle Higashioka then stepped in and lifted his third long ball of the season, a two-run homer to left to make it 4-0 Tampa.
After Tampa tacked on a run off Rios (5-3) in the fifth, the Clearwater bullpen held the Yankees at bay. Harold Guerrero, Alberto Tirado, and Ethan Stewart combined to shut out the Yankees through the final 4.2 innings.
The lone run for Clearwater came back in the first inning.
With two outs, Pullin unloaded a bomb out to left for his career-high 12th home run of the year. That places him in a tie with two others for the Florida State League lead in home runs.
Jonathan Holder (6-3) earned the victory for Tampa, limiting the Threshers to a run on three hits and two walks in his six innings.
The Threshers (30-19) will face off against Tampa (23-25) in the rubber game of the series on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. David Whitehead (7-10) takes the hill for Clearwater, opposed by Gabriel Encinas (2-4). The call can be heard live on the Threshers Broadcast Network starting at 6:15 p.m.
Saturday will also be Veterans and Military Appreciation Night at Bright House Field, with a Military Heroes card set giveaway and postgame fireworks presented by Bosley and Bratch. Tickets are available here, at the Threshers Box Office, or by calling 727-467-4457.
