Pulaski Takes Series Opener

Pulaski, VA- The Pulaski Mariners defeated the Burlington Royals in the first game of the series, which was completed Sunday night, after being suspended on Saturday. David Colvin earned his first win for the Mariners, while Rudy Brown is tagged with his first loss.

When the game restarted on Sunday night, Nick Graffeo, the scheduled starter for the Sunday contest took the hill for Burlington. Brett Shankin replaced Kyle Hunter in the second inning.

Burlington scored first in the top of the third. After Jose Rodriguez walked, and stole second, Cam Connor doubled to score Rodriguez and make it 1-0 Royals. In the home half of the inning, Pulaski responded with a tally of their own. With the bases loaded and one out, Jean Acevedo flied out to center, but it was deep enough to score Dillon Hazlett from third base.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, the Mariners would break the tie. After two straight singles, Daniel Paolini tripled to right, scoring both runners. He would score on a balk from Rudy Brown to make it 4-1. In the Royals' next at bat, Rodriguez scored on a single from Connor to make it a two-run game. Burlington would load the bases with two outs, but Jared Dyer would pop out to end the threat. Also in the ninth, with two away, the Royals loaded the bags, but Kenny Swab was called out on strikes to end the ballgame, giving the Mariners the 4-2 victory.

Angel Baez started the game for Burlington, and allowed a hit before the game was suspended. Graffeo allowed a run in three and a third innings. In what was essentially a start for Graffeo, he walked three and struck out four. Brown surrendered three runs on four hits in two and two thirds, while Abel Gonzales, struck out three, while giving up one hit over his two innings of work.

Kyle Hunter struck out two batters he faced in the first inning. Brett Shankin was on the mound when the game resumed, and pitched three innings, allowing three hits and a run, while striking out three. Colvin also went three innings giving up an unearned run on three hits, and recorded three strikeouts. Robert Shore walked one and gave up a hit in two thirds of an inning. John Taylor recorded the save, while allowing two hits and a walk in an inning and one third.

Connor went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Jorge Bonifacio went 2-for-5. Rodriguez scored two runs, and went 2-for-3. Murray Watts and Anthony Howard each recorded a hit in the loss.

Jamal Austin had a 3-for-4 outing, while four other Mariners recorded one hit. Daniel Paolini knocked in two runs, a game high, and also scored a run.

The second game of the night was scheduled to start after Saturday's game was completed. More to come on game two.
