DANVILLE, Va. - The Braves (3-5) will be happy to see the friendly confines of ALP 325 Field Saturday night as they finished up their first road trip of the season Friday evening. The trip did not go as the team had hoped, going just 1-5 and behind swept by the Appalachian League East opponent Pulaski Mariners.
The Mariners (5-4) rallied late for three runs in the bottom of the eighth off Braves reliever Matt Kimbrel to take the lead, and then held off the Braves threat in the ninth to finish off the three game sweep.
Both starters were excellent in the game as neither game up any runs while on the mound. Jorge Montenegro for the Braves pitched five shutout innings and Mariners starter Ramire Cleto threw seven shutout innings.
The Mariners were able to manufacture a run in the 7th to get on the scoreboard. Wilton Martinez doubled to leadoff the inning and after reaching third on a single, he was able to come home on a sac fly by Kristian Brito.
Danville was able to answer in the eighth with two runs of their own on a Justin Black RBI single and Seth Moranda successfully completing a squeeze play as Jacob Schrader sprinted home to score the go ahead run.
Kimbrel came into the game in the bottom of the eighth but was unable to hold the lead giving up three runs on three hits and two walks in his single inning on the mound.
The Mariners were able to push across the runs on a bases loaded walk by Kimbrel (0-1) followed later by a two RBI single by Luke Guarnaccia to push the game to its final score at 4-2.
The D-Braves threatened in the 9th on after Victor Caratini doubled with one out, but the team was unable to rally after him as Daniel Thieben (1-0) was able to close out the game.
The D-Braves will return home Saturday for a three game set with the Bluefield Blue Jays as they will look to reverse their current four game skid. Stephen Janas will make his home debut for Danville as he faces Brady Dragmire for Bluefield.
Saturday June 29 will also be Military Appreciation Night at the stadium as all current and retired military personnel will be granted free entrance to the game. The game is set for a 7:00 p.m. start and gates will open approximately one hour before first pitch.
