Real Maryland Monarchs News Release

Silver Spring, MD - On what turned out to be a beautiful night for soccer, the Real Maryland Monarchs and Charleston Battery played to a 0-0 tie. Both teams had opportunities to pull away throughout the game, yet strong defense and goalkeeping from both sides prevented each scoring chance. The result leaves Real Maryland (3-7-7) in last place while Charleston (10-3-4) remains atop the standings.

Coming off a loss and a tie in their two previous outings, the Monarchs were looking for a win to help bolster their playoff chances.

In a first half focused on defense, neither team had many offensive opportunities. After a slow start where both teams traded possession back and forth, Real Maryland had their first scoring opportunity off a corner in the 4th minutes. However, forward Jyler Noviello's shot was saved by Charleston goalkeeper Kyle Reynish.

Play continued back and forth with very little pressure being put on each team's defense. Charleston had shots from midfielders Kevin Jackson and Aloune Gueye in a two minute span, but both shots sailed over the crossbar.

As the first half began to wind down, both teams began to develop their attack. In the 35th minute, Real Maryland midfielder Rod Dyachenko had a header on goal off a cross from midfielder Nate Baker, but the shot was easily stopped by Reynish. Charleston saw a shot by midfielder Zach Prince sail over the crossbar in the 38th minute. Soon thereafter, Noviello placed a shot into the lower left-hand corner of the goal, but saw his shot denied by Reynish.

The teams headed into the locker rooms at halftime with the score tied 0-0.

The second half began with a scoring opportunity for the Battery, but the shot from midfielder Jon Gruenewald went wide of the goal. The Monarchs answered back with a shot into the lower righ-hand corner by Dyachenko, but was stopped by Reynish. The Monarchs also saw a shot from midfielder Nicki Paterson sail to the right of the goal in the 52nd minute.

After a shot from Charleston's substitute Pierre-Rudolph Mayard missed the target in the 60th minute, Real Maryland dominated possession the rest of the game. However, a series of attacks in the 70th and 75th minute were ruled offside and a shot from Dyachenko sailed over the crossbar.

Real Maryland goalkeeper Brian Levy made a fantastic save on a shot off a Charleston cross in the 79th minute, which ended up as the last of Charleston's significant scoring opportunities.

On what was perhaps their best opportunity of the match, Paterson received a cross from Real Maryland substitute David Bulow seven feet from the goal, but his shot cleared the crossbar in the 90th minute. The Monarchs maintained the pressure on Charleston's defense as the game came to an end, but were unable to put the ball into the back of the net.

Real Maryland faces off with the Pittsburgh Riverhounds on July 31st as they look to gain some ground in the standings and win a spot in the playoffs. Charleston will head to Charlotte looking to strengthen their hold on the top spot of the table.
