Early Goal Provides Richmond a Win

Richmond, VA-The Kickers (7-5-5) score early and secure the win over the Riverhounds (5-5-6). The dreaded back-to-back weekend coupled with Mother Nature's extreme heat took its toll on the Riverhounds and ended with a split decision. Following a hard fought win on Friday, the Riverhounds battled hard but fell short of the Kickers.
With second place up for grabs, the Kickers struck early and didn't look back. A cross from Kickers' midfielder, Mike Burke landed at the foot of Bobby Fogelsong at the top of the penalty area. Fogelsong confidently stepped into the strike and slid it past Riverhounds goal keeper, Hunter Gilstrap in the 8th minute. The early score is all the Kickers would need to earn 3 points.
The Kickers would not hold back with a one-gaol lead. They pressed forward with speed and intent but were stonewalled by Gilstrap and the Riverhounds defense. Every time the Kickers would break free for a quality opportunity to open the score, Gilstrap stood strong and came up with multiple big saves.
The Riverhounds, carrying heavy legs, fought to equalize and nearly did in the closing minutes. Feeding off of the fumes left in their tank, the Hounds had two late opportunities coming from rookie, Jeremy Deighton. In the 86th minute, Deighton received a direct service with his chest. His receipt of the service took him away from his mark and allowed him to volley a right-footed blast. Kickers' veteran keeper, Ronnie Pascale was in good position and handled the shot with confidence.
The final Riverhounds chance to equalize was delivered by Ryan Pierce in the 89th minute. A right-to-left cross from Pierce found Deighton free at the back bar to leap and head the service down and on target. Only a tremendous diving save from Pascale would deny Deighton and the Riverhounds the equalizer.
The Riverhounds return to action next Saturday in Pittsburgh to battle against the Real Maryland Monarchs. The match is scheduled for a 7:00 PM Kick-Off at Chartiers Valley Stadium.
