Pro basketball comes to the Borough of Kings
November 2, 2006 - American Basketball Association (ABA)
Brooklyn Comets News Release
Brooklyn, NY. This season, the hottest ticket in Brooklyn will be the borough's brand new professional basketball team - the Brooklyn Wonders. The ABA new NY team will hit the hardwood for its exciting home opener set for Saturday, November 11th at 7pm against regional rival, the Newark Express. All home games are played at Kingsborough Community College (KBCC) in Manhattan Beach, Brooklyn.
The twelve Brooklyn Wonders players were recruited locally at open try-outs and are a strong talented mix of quickness, finesse and power. The team is coached by GM Ron Eford, former Marquette University ('96) standout who played eight years of international and stateside pro ball.
Team president Leigh Sutton said, "Brooklyn has a long and proud sports tradition - producing some of the greatest sports franchises and players of all time. The Brooklyn Wonders hope to write the newest chapter in this great history. Our team will bring an exciting brand of ABA basketball to the Brooklyn community, while at the same time providing an affordable and entertaining local attraction that entire families will enjoy."
Coach Eford said, "With the emergence of the ABA in New York, the Brooklyn Wonders are giving many talented players the opportunity to make their professional basketball dreams a reality. The season opener is less than two weeks away and we're ready to show our fans that we've got game."
The Wonders will play a 36-game schedule with the ABA's signature red, white and blue ball, living up to their name with up-tempo, high-scoring games in the Kingsborough Community College Physical Education Center. The team will offer loads of affordable fun for the family. The Wonderettes dance team will liven up game breaks, and at most home games a lucky fan will have a chance to win $10,000 in a half-time shooting contest. Also, a guest "13th" Man - a celebrity, corporate or public figure, will be invited to play. Exciting new ABA rules open a new dimension to the game as well. The first game of the season will be played against the Strong Island Sound on Friday, November 10th.
Ticket prices are $15 for adults, $10 for children and seniors, $22 for courtside seating and can be purchased online at www.brooklynwonders.com or by calling 800 514 3849 or at the day of game ticket window. Season tickets and group tickets are also available. For more information and for directions to the KBCC sports facility, please go to www.brooklynwonders.com or visit www.abalive.com.
Note: OurSports Central no longer actively covers the American Basketball Association (ABA) as a professional league due in part to its inability to publish and play a schedule and the transitory nature of many of its teams.
