Privateers Shoot For First Place Against Frenzy

January 20, 2011 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Watertown Privateers News Release

The 1000 Islands Privateers sit one point out of first place in the Federal Hockey League as they enter a pivotal weekend homestand. They start a pair at the Bonnie Castle Rec Center against the Rome Frenzy Friday night at 7 PM.

Mike Elberty's Privateers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win Sunday afternoon against Rome. Alex Goupil took the league lead in goals with a hat trick and has 29 on the campaign. He continues to lead the FHL in power play goals with 11. Teammate Alex Lacombe is second in assists with 34. Goupil and Lacombe are 2-3 in overall scoring. Goupil's linemate Tyler Fernandez joins his teammates in the top 10 of league scorers, landing on the scoresheet in the last 20 games he has played. The backline has been strong, led by goaltender Josselin St. Pierre, who currently ranks first in wins (15) and goals against average (2.77). Backup Rich Sillery has won his last two starts against the Frenzy. The team will be asked to play without top defenseman and team captain Shawn Fensel, who signed with the Missouri Mavericks of the Central Hockey League this week. Shawn takes his high hockey IQ and impressive two-way play with him. His presence on the blue line, special teams, and in the dressing room will be sorely missed.

Gary Gill and the Frenzy have played stronger hockey over the past month. Tibor Varga now sits atop the league in points, overall assists, shots, and shorthanded assists. Fellow forwards Vince Nucci and Anthony Monte continue to cause trouble for opposing defenses. That offense dominated Akwesasne Wednesday last night 8-1 at home, as Varga collected a goal and four assists. The defense has played more confidently since Richard Scarsella replaced Shane Davis between the pipes. However, Scarsella suffered an undisclosed injury last night and will be out for Friday's contest. Coach Gill will turn to Eric Keiffer or Anthony Luckow against the potent Privateers offense.

The team will continue their charity auction Friday night with a silent auction of gift baskets and unique fan experiences. The team will host Danbury on Sunday afternoon at 3 PM, hoping to avenge their 6-5 overtime loss last Friday night at the Danbury Ice Arena. The Privateers will host guests from the Children's Charities and the 50/50 raffle for the game will benefit the local non-profit.

The 1000 Islands Privateers operate in Alexandria Bay and are a founding franchise in the Federal Hockey League. The Privateers play at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center in Alexandria Bay. ‚¬Å“The future is now ‚¬Â in the Federal Hockey League as the top talent play professional hockey with a chance to advance their careers.
