Watertown Privateers News Release
The 1000 Islands Privateers have surged to the top level of the Federal Hockey League with strong play and great team chemistry. Those who know hockey and followed the team wondered when the higher-level teams would offer someone a chance to prove himself at the next stage. That day has come as Privateers' defenseman and captain Shawn Fensel has agreed to join the Central Hockey League's Missouri Mavericks.
Fensel's name is well-known among Northcountry hockey fans. After a stellar career with his hometown Nepean Raiders, Shawn played four years of varsity hockey at St. Lawrence University, captaining the team his junior and senior years. Shawn graduated in 2009 and joined the Cincinnati Cyclones of the ECHL. He suffered an injury during camp and missed the 09-10 season. Shawn got a call from SLU alum Nicole Kirnan to work for her new hockey team in Alexandria Bay and has served as director of hockey operations in addition to his roles as team captain and top defenseman. He operates on the power play, where his 17 power-play assists lead the FHL, and kill penalties. Fensel has fought a foot injury for part of the season after blocking a Pierre Dagenais slapshot against the rival Akwesasne Warriors but still amassed 5 goals and 27 assists in 30 games. His plus/ minus rating of +19 is second in the league to teammate Michael Byrd. Fensel also spent time running practices, coordinating team functions, and working closely with coach Mike Elberty on game planning. When Coach Elberty misses a game, Shawn often fills the role as player-coach. Privateers fans will miss seeing Shawn rush end-to-end with the puck, directing traffic on both offensive and defensive zones, and his signature slapshot from the point on the man advantage.
The Missouri Mavericks are a young franchise that joined the Central Hockey League. The CHL is comprised of teams in the Midwest and South, from Arizona to Mississippi, as south as the Rio Grande to South Dakota up north. The Mavericks play in Independence, Missouri, just outside of Kansas City. In their second season of existence they are currently tied for third place in the Turner Conference, one point out of first. Former Privateer Brennan Sarazin currently plays in the CHL for the Mississippi Riverkings. Shawn and the Mavericks will try to get their first win of the year against the Riverkings Tuesday, February 8th in Southaven.
The 1000 Islands Privateers operate in Alexandria Bay and are a founding franchise in the Federal Hockey League. The Privateers play at the Bonnie Castle Recreation Center in Alexandria Bay. "The future is now" in the Federal Hockey League as the top talent play professional hockey with a chance to advance their careers.
