Privateers Go For First Place Against Akwesasne
February 3, 2011 - Federal Prospects Hockey League (FPHL)
Watertown Privateers News Release
The 1000 Islands Privateers will face their rivals the Akwesasne Warriors in a home-and-home series this weekend with first place in the Federal Hockey League on the line. The Privateers trail by five points with a game in hand, but can take the lead on winning percentage with a sweep of the weekend series. The series starts Friday night at Bonnie Castle Rec Center and concludes the next night in Akwesasne.
Mike Elberty's Privateers have endured adversity and hardship this year, losing key players to injuries and call-ups. However, every time they appear to be out, they get back up and punch back harder. Following the 8-5 loss at Akwesasne Saturday night, the Privateers overcame an early 2-0 deficit to score four goals in each of the final two periods and win 8-4 Sunday afternoon. The offense, led by FHL Player of the Month for January Alex Goupil, had continued to take over games and wear down opponents with speed, skill, and relentless forechecking. His linemate Tyler Fernandez has scored every game he has played since the start of December. Defensemen Mike Byrd and James Kirkwood are also contributing to the scoresheet, in addition to backing the strong blue-line play. Since the call-up of starting goalie Josselin St. Pierre, Richard Sillery has taken over in the net. He got the win Sunday with a strong performance. The Laporte brothers have been reunited in Alex Bay to help the team prepare for the playoffs. Will plays center while Nick is a defenseman and will help protect the skill players. The Privateers have won the last three games at home against the Warriors
Angelo Sanseverino and the Warriors have remained in first for most of the season. They display a combination of high-powered offense and physical play. While league-leading scorer Pierre Dagenais left to play in Europe, the younger forwards have filled his role and made the attack more potent. Martin Beaulne won Rookie of the Month for January, while Darick Ste. Marie and Joshua Desmarias had hat tricks in the last two games. The defense, led by Carter Trevasani, has steadily improved and the penalty kill now joins the power play atop the FHL rankings. Goaltender David Plouffe needs to bounce back from a less-than-stellar weekend. He allowed thirteen goals in home wins against Rome and 1000 Islands, and was pulled after allowing six goals Sunday afternoon.
Friday night's match-up is Privateers Thunderstick Night. The first 800 fans will receive a part of Thundersticks, courtesy of FX Caprara. Akwesasne will visit Bonnie Castle again on Thursday, February 10th. The team will honor the men and women who serve the North Country for 1st Responders Appreciation Night. Discount tickets will be available to those in uniform.
